Looking to cool off and get out of town for the day as the temperatures heat up? San Antonio is just a short drive from some of the best lakes and rivers in Texas Hill Country—perfect for swimming, boating, floating, or simply relaxing near the water. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a friends’ float trip, or a solo escape into nature, these nearby spots offer a refreshing break from city life. One of the top picks is Canyon Lake, known for its clear waters, scenic limestone bluffs, and range of activities. You can rent a boat, stake out a spot on one of the lakeside beaches, or float the Guadalupe River just below the dam. With multiple parks, boat ramps, and picnic areas, Canyon Lake is one of the most versatile summer escapes within an hour of San Antonio.
For a more elevated day trip, Horseshoe Bay on Lake LBJ brings resort vibes to the Hill Country. Just under two hours from downtown San Antonio, this upscale destination is ideal for those looking to mix lake life with a touch of luxury. The area features full-service marinas, boat and jet ski rentals, and a backdrop of rolling hills that make every view Instagram-worthy. It’s also home to the Horseshoe Bay Resort, where you can grab lunch, sip a cocktail by the water, or even make a weekend out of it. With calm, constant-level waters and plenty of coves to explore, Lake LBJ is perfect for wakeboarding, tubing, or anchoring for a swim with friends.
And no summer is complete without a float down the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels—often called the float capital of Texas. Just 45 minutes from the city, this classic Hill Country experience is all about grabbing a tube, loading up a cooler, and drifting through shady cypress-lined bends. For families or anyone looking to stay a bit closer, Boerne City Lake Park offers paddleboard rentals, designated swim zones, and picnic-friendly spaces just 30 minutes up the road. Whether you’re after big water adventures or small-town lake charm, San Antonio has easy access to some of the best day-trip destinations in the state—all just a drive away.
