Southtown may get all the spotlight, but just across the way, the Hays Street District is one of San Antonio’s up-and-coming micro-districts—full of potential and already showing signs of becoming something truly special. Anchored by the iconic Hays Street Bridge, this East Side pocket blends historic grit with a fresh crop of small businesses that are giving the area a new sense of identity. The bridge itself dates back to 1881, originally spanning the Nueces River before being relocated to connect San Antonio’s East Side to downtown in 1910. After decades of disrepair, it was restored and reopened in 2010 as a pedestrian walkway, now offering some of the best skyline views in the city—and becoming a favorite for cyclists, photographers, and sunset seekers.
Just steps from the bridge are two anchor hangouts that define the district’s laid-back energy: Burleson Yard Beer Garden and Alamo Beer Company. Burleson Yard brings people together with its massive patio, shaded picnic tables, and rotating food trucks, creating an easygoing, dog-friendly spot perfect for groups. A short walk away, Alamo Beer offers a full tap list of locally brewed beers, a sprawling beer hall, and regular events ranging from live music to community trivia nights. Both are excellent starting points for anyone looking for things to do in San Antonio that are off the beaten tourist path.
Between these two anchors, you’ll find a handful of hidden gems adding flavor and personality to the area. Southwest Elixirs is a wellness-forward café slinging herbal tonics, non-alcoholic elixirs, and plant-based drinks in a clean, calm space built for intentional living. Right next door, Traveler Barbershop merges classic barbering with modern design—making it a go-to for sharp cuts and good vibes. And just around the corner, BoxCar Bar offers a cozy, low-key neighborhood bar experience, perfect for catching up with friends or grabbing a quiet drink in the middle of the growing district.
Whether you’re catching a golden hour photo on the bridge, grabbing a beer with friends, or discovering new local businesses, the Hays Street District is proof that small pockets of the city can hold big promise. It’s a walkable, welcoming strip that’s building something special—step by step, pint by pint.
